Travel Rewards are the New Black

Posted On: July 4, 2016

Here at Docherty Incentives & Meetings we frequently get asked these questions: “So, why travel? Why do you love to travel?” There are so many reasons and here they are:

  • Travel challenges the ideas you have about yourself and your world—it really does broaden your horizon—and it broadens your thinking.
  • Travel helps you get to know yourself better especially because you’re out of your comfort and day-to-day zones. New settings offer new perspectives.
  • Travel allows you opportunity to experience completely different cultures and ways of being including new foods and new customs.
  • Travel gets you in touch with the past—ancient civilizations and the structures they built or the art they created and cherished.
  • Travel can put you in vastly different climates and natural settings than what you’re used to—there are so many diverse environments on our planet…traveling lets you explore those places and feel the difference.
  • Travel gives you permission to relax.
  • Travel is playtime and party time and created, in part, to unwind from the daily grind.

We’re completely committed to planning travel incentive programs for your teams that incorporate elements of each of those amazing reasons to travel. Docherty Incentives & Meetings have scouted out the best of the best…so indulge us and enjoy some of the places we’re loving right now.

Beach Bums

The Caribbean is the perfect destination for those seeking a laid-back atmosphere. Many of the islands can offer as much or as little as you want them to, and often both! With 28 island nations and more than 7,000 individual islands, the Caribbean offers beautiful beaches, swaying palm trees and unparalleled snorkeling and diving. Many islands in this region are just a three-hour plane ride from New York, which is close enough for a few nights’ getaway. Among fishing enthusiasts, the Bahamas, Antigua and the Dominican Republic are favorite destinations to catch bonefish, blue marlin, tarpon and dolphin.

In the Dominican Republic, Casa de Campo stands out for its lush 7,000 acres and unrivaled golf courses. Created by renowned golf-course designer Pete Dye, the Teeth of the Dog golf course is rated the #1 golf course in the Caribbean and is the jewel of this resort, along with the other courses on the property: Dye Fore and The Linx.

Another destination for those looking to sink their toes in the sand is Providenciales (or “Provo” as it is affectionately known) in Turks and Caicos. Located in the Atlantic Ocean below the Bahamas chain, Turks and Caicos offers scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking and fishing. Provo, the most developed island in this area, boasts Grace Bay Beach, which was voted the #1 beach in the world according to TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards.

For travelers looking for a balance of beautiful beaches and captivating culture, Puerto Vallarta is the perfect destination. To get a taste of the local culture, visitors can walk the malecon, or boardwalk, stroll through the flea market in Old Vallarta, shop for handmade, local crafts and check out art galleries in El Centro. Travelers to Puerto Vallarta can sample some local culinary favorites including “pescado embarazado,” fish roasted on a stick or “birria,” which is goat or lamb meat in a spicy sauce served with onions and tortillas.

City Slickers

Roaming cobblestone streets, visiting historic cathedrals or sitting at a local café to people-watch may be one’s idea of the perfect summer escape. For those, destinations such as Paris, Berlin, Barcelona or even Dubai may be on their bucket list, and Docherty Incentives & Meetings is here to help. Paris is the cultural heart of Europe where travelers can visit iconic sites including the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathédral and the Eiffel Tower. Cruising along the Seine and sampling some Parisian cuisine will give even the most skeptical traveler insight into why Paris shows up in so many movies and books.

Berlin is another European capital filled with history and is becoming an increasingly diverse city. In this once-partitioned city, visitors can see the Brandenburg Gate, a portion of the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag, which is the home of the German parliament and the Pergamon Museum. Shoppers can wander through funky boutiques and markets that reflect the different vibe of each neighborhood. As far as European capitals go, Berlin is also a great value.

Spain is another favorite European destination! With a mix of cosmopolitan cities, popular beaches and stunning mountains, vineyards and cider houses, Spain has something for everyone. Barcelona features modernist architecture while Madrid boasts the world-renowned Prado Museum. History buffs can head south to Granada and visit the Alhambra, a Moorish palace and fortress complex built in the 13th Century. Hikers can explore the Pyrenees mountains while those looking for beaches can check out San Sebastián in the north, Barcelona in the east or the Andalucia region in southern Spain. World-class cuisine and delicious wine are two more reasons Spain is a great travel destination.

Of course, there is no place in the world like Dubai, which feels like a different planet. Where else could travelers ski indoors in the desert, visit the tallest building in the world, eat at a restaurant that is inside a giant aquarium and ride camels on the beach? Dubai is truly one-of-a-kind, and Docherty Incentives & Meetings can help your employees or customers see this kaleidoscope for themselves.

Something for Everyone

If you would like a mix of the great outdoors with urban adventures, there are many options around the world. Visiting Canada is not only convenient, but it is also a great value and boasts international cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver as well as mountainous areas like Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, giving visitors a taste of the Canadian Rockies.

Another tried and true, popular destination that could never disappoint: Ireland. Boasting 18 hours of daylight in summer, green hills and some of the world’s friendliest people. Spend a couple of days wandering around Dublin and shopping Grafton Street. Visit the Book of Kells and the library at Trinity College. Kiss the Blarney Stone in County Cork and drive along the stunning coastline to the western shores of the “Emerald Isle.” Stay in an historical castle or challenge your golf prowess on the many beautiful golf courses.

Adventures and experiences will leave lasting impressions and memories with travelers. This is a destination worth repeating and there are many places to explore, each offering a different experience. Don’t forget Dublin’s relative to the north—Belfast! Home to the shipyard of the Titanic, Belfast is now a happening city and home to the Titanic Museum, which holds many artifacts and treasures and tells the tale of this fascinating ship and her passengers.

South Africa is the final spot on this list of favorite destinations. Experience the beauty and culture of South Africa with a stay in Cape Town. Take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain for commanding 360° views of the city and ocean. Visit Robben Island and step inside the very cell where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. See the Cape of Good Hope, where the Indian and Atlantic oceans peacefully meet. Visit the Gansbaai region for a once-in-a-lifetime shark cage dive! For the wine connoisseurs, no trip to South Africa is complete without a visit to the Stellenbosch region.

Once you have exhausted Cape Town, move on to the incredible Kruger National Park and experience the thrilling game drives. While on safari you may see “The Big Five” (African Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Black/white rhinoceros and the Cape Buffalo). Every game drive is a different experience and travelers will see a variety of other animals that call Kruger their home.
